Teenage Boys Don’t Have The Patience For Social Media

5 Comments 04 March 2008

I have been trying to convince my 15 year old son that he should start a skateboarding blog. He loves to skateboard, take videos of his friends skateboarding and read all the latest tips and tricks on the internet that have to do with skateboarding, so to me it only makes sense that he should form his own on-line community and write about his obsession passion.

Why he doesn’t seem to be interested, is beyond me. I’ve tried to tempt convince him that he might actually be able to make some money someday with advertisers, I told him I could teach him everything he needs to know to make a really cool blog but still, no interest. What is wrong with this child?

Evidently, boys just don’t have the patience………….

“Research shows that among the youngest Internet users, the primary
creators of Web content (blogs, graphics, photographs, Web sites) are
not misfits resembling the Lone Gunmen of “The X Files.” On the
contrary, the cyberpioneers of the moment are digitally effusive
teenage girls.”

According the New York Times, a study published in December by the Pew Internet & American Life
Project, found that among Web users ages 12 to 17, significantly more
girls than boys blog. Video posting was the only area that boys outranked girls when it came to internet usage. The study also found that the amount of teenage bloggers nearly doubled from 2004-2006 and that growth is attributed to the various on-line activities of girls.

So, the fact that my son does not want to sit at the computer and actually “create” content seems to be the norm. He would rather take his passion to the skate park in hopes of catching the eye of some skate scout and become the next Tony Hawk. Unfortunately, his chances of becoming a successful blogger are probably higher than the chances of him becoming a professional skateboarder but I’m not going to tell him that.

  1. Having watched my 11 year old daughter and her friends take to Webkinz like flies to honey I can see what you mean. She already wants a Twitter account too.

I think women love to communicate and anything that allows us to do so will be adopted pronto.

  3. How interesting! Makes completely sense to me as a female blogger, but a bit surprising nonetheless!
