A social media course for kids should be on every school curriculum. Heck even adults, who were not born into this, should complete such a course. There is no choice. Social media networking has come to be the main form of communication, advertising, and a key structure in many relationships. Without the right tools a person can cause lots of damage to their image, their business, and in worst case scenario, themselves. Unfortunately that is not uncommon.

Considering the statistical implementation of social network usage today, and the hoards of people involved, specifically with public profiles, there are bound to be lots of naïve people navigating the field. To avoid falling prey of being misinformed it is imperative that we educate ourselves. Thankfully there are courses to empower us with taking charge of our image, and teach us safe communication.

Currently, a Brooklyn school has adopted an after school program teaching children to protect their privacy online, and how to avoid cyber-bullies.

Social Media For Kids® has recently launched a program that educates children on how to promote themselves in a positive light, enabling the “safe use of social media outlets as learning tools.” Social media for kids is directed at children age 10 years plus. The program is free and available to schools, communities and parent groups throughout the United States. The aim is to work hand in hand with parents and educators so that everyone is better able to deal with the situation, and encourage children to safe use of the web.

Web analytic Jason Egan implicates the need for serious change in educating students. Their use of social media networks is inevitable, and youngsters make up the majority of users. He claims the sphere of the classroom has evolved far beyond the influence of educators.

What are you doing to ensure your child is safe in a world you have little control of?

    Hi Mrs. Cohen,
Nice article. I agree, the schools should offer a course in Social Media. They teach them how to interact in person and most of them will be interacting using social media the most. I wish that some of the community colleges would offer such a course for 65+ to bring us all up to speed too.

This is a great article. I have taken the responsibility to mentor my kids through socializing online and have chosen Google+ as a safe place to start with my 10 year old. I blogged about it this week. I don’t trust the school system just yet to teach this to my kids as the teachers don’t understand social media either.
