What If a Man Was In Labor?

1 Comment 09 February 2011

Dr. Andrew Rochford aspires to answer the question, who has the higher pain threshold? Men or women? By using a contraction simulator - which contracts your muscles as if you were in labor - Rochford wants to find out if childbirth is all it’s cracked up to be. He begins with prelabor, most women are still home during this time and contractions are around 30 seconds in length and seven minutes apart at it’s height. Once contractions are 5 minutes apart it is time to go to the hospital. Rochford begins having a lot of trouble at this point. He uses different methods of pain relief, such as bouncing and baching stress balls and then tries hypnobirthing, which is an attempt to “go to your happy place” - this doesn’t work for Rochford. Finally, Rochford’s contractions are close enough together that he can partake in some happy gas. Average labor time for a woman having her first child is 10 - 12 hours. Rochford was “in labor” just over three hours and admitted, hands down, that women have the higher pain threshold.
