Children are always safest when placed in the back seat. Children over the age of 2 can be in a foward-facing child safety, or in a rear-facing convertible seats of the child has not reached the maximum weight capacity for rear-facing seats. It is always preferred to keep your little one in a rear-facing seat for as long as possible.

The type of seat your child needs depends on a couple different factors. Your child’s size and the type of vehicle you have being the two main concerns. Infants and toddlers are to ride in rear-facing only seats and rear-facing convertible seats until they are 2 years of age or until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat’s manufacturer. All children over the age of 2 years old or those younger than 2 years who have outgrown the rear-facing weight or height limit for their car seat, should use a forward-facing car seat with a harness for as long as possible, up to the highest weight or height allowed their car seat’s manufacturer. And lastly, school-aged children are to be sat in booster seats typically when they have reached 4 feet 9 inches in height and are in between 8 and 12 years of age.

When choosing the correct car seat for your child, be sure the harness is set for the weight and height of the child. Be sure the harness is also buckled tight so you cannot pinch extra webbing at the shoulder. Putting your child in the correct car seat will be the key to keeping your child. And don’t forget to be a good role model, always wear your seat belt as well to show your child the importance of wearing a safety belt.
