Five Health Lessons We Can Learn From Robin Roberts [Infographic]

0 Comments 10 April 2013

In 2007, Robin Roberts, co-anchor of “Good Morning America,” announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2012,
she told the world that she had been diagnosed with a chemotherapy-related condition called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). In both instances, millions of Americans rallied around her and expressed their well wishes to the TV talent. We can all learn several important lessons from both of Roberts’ health challenges.

The first lesson is that millions of Americans have, in fact, conquered cancer. Roberts herself wrote in 2008 on ABCNews.com about her fight against breast cancer: “It is not my life story, and it will not be the last chapter in my life story.” The three most common types of cancer among female survivors include breast, colorectal, and uterine cancers. The three most common types of cancer among male survivors include prostate, colorectal, and melanoma cancers.

Another key lesson we can learn is that breast cancer, while common, is beatable. The 5-year survival rate for invasive breast cancer among women is 90 percent, which is important because the projected number of new cases of invasive breast cancer in the U.S for 2013 is 232,340. We’ve also learned that chemotherapy, a type of treatment that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells, is costly—but potentially life-saving. 650,000 patients in the U.S. undergo chemotherapy each year. The estimated annual medical costs for a U.S. chemo patient who has private insurance is a whopping $111,000.

Perhaps most importantly, we can learn that faith, family, and friends can make a huge difference in various battles, including the fight against cancer. During her bouts with breast cancer and MDS, Roberts has leaned heavily on faith, family, and friends. She has said they’ve given her the “motivation and energy” to face her health challenges. After oral painkillers, prayer is the second most common form of pain management.
