Did you know that it is against Facebook’s Policies and Procedures to use your personal profile to sell for your business? Their policy is not to use your profile for “monetary gain”? Not too many people know this, and the thing to keep in mind is if you get caught, Facebook could shut down your profile.
Ok so seriously, it’s the first day to the 31 Days to Master Facebook Marketing, I am not, by any means, trying to be a Debbie Downer here, but I have worked with hundreds of men and women and many have told me that they have been told by bosses, uplines, and friends to use their personal profile to build their business, and that, my friend, is just, simply, terrible advice.
Your Facebook Profile is your personal persona. You are only allowed to have one and it generally is created by using your first and last name. Many women, including me, are able to insert their maiden name so that the friends they had before marriage can recognize their names.
Facebook is all about friends, family and conversations that matter. In fact, they are so much about these things that they have changed their algorithm a bazillion times to make sure that meaningful, interesting and engaging content is being shown in everyone’s newsfeed.
That is one of the reasons why many people don’t understand why they get so much more engagement on their profiles and not as much on their page. Facebook designed it that way. Certainly you can use your personal profile to tell your friends and family about your latest project or business venture but to try and get people to buy or sign up to buy on your profile is, like I mentioned, against the rules.
Your Facebook Page is the place where users can buy, sell, promote sign ups, and even set appointments for businesses. We are definitely going to do some detailed work when it comes to your Facebook Page over the next 31 Days, but for now, it is important to realize what kind of people are looking at your profile and page.
Your personal profile is set up to accept no more than 5,000 friends. Usually these people are family members, friends from school, business friends and so on. It is a huge mix of people. They are the ones that enjoy seeing your photos, reading your updates and even wishing you a happy birthday.
Your page, however, is designed to build a community, set yourself up as the authority, and promote your business. There is no limit to how many “Likes” you can have on your Facebook page.
You can not run Facebook Ads to your profile. It would be nice, especially if you had 5,000 “friends” but you can not. You can only run ads to your Facebook page so you definitely want to have one if you are going to do any Facebook Marketing.
Just like you might want to give your friends and family and update every once in a while about a project you’re working on in your business, you might also want to tell your fans a bit about your personal life on your Facebook Page. The key with a Facebook Page is that you want your customers to know you are human and you are interested in them more than just what you can get from them…..for instance, the sale!
The last thing I will mention is that Facebook Pages are indexed by Google, so this means that if someone does a search for you, they will find you on your page more often than your profile.
So those are the key differences between a Facebook profile and a Facebook Page. With that said, the rest of our 31 Days will be spent focusing on our Facebook Page because that is how you market your business on Facebook.
If you have any questions about profiles and pages, please leave a comment below and I will be happy to respond. You can also join our private Facebook Group to discuss and ask questions as we go through this writing challenge. And of course, if you want to make it really easy to get access to every single day of the 31 Days, then by all means, click here to subscribe to this blog and every post will be automatically sent to your email inbox.
That’s it for Day 1, stay tuned for Day 2 which will be all about setting up your Facebook Page the RIGHT WAY. See you tomorrow…..
