Two of the most common defensive formations are the 3–4 defense and the 4-3 defense. The 3-4 defensive alignment consists of three defensive linemen and four linebackers. The 4-3 defensive alignment consists of four defensive linemen and three linebackers.
Man to man coverage is basically as it sounds. A defensive player will be assigned a player on the offense to cover. The defensive player will cover or stay with his man until the end of the play.
Zone coverage is about an area. A defensive player will be assigned an area to cover. When an offensive player, like a receiver, enters into a protected area then the defensive player will block or tackle that player.
I wanted to try something new with a couple of videos. I hope these have helped with explaining a bit more about coverages and defensive formations. Tomorrow I will talk a bit more about defense and the last group of guys that make up the backfield……called the secondary.
