Most little girls don’t dream of becoming computer programers like they dream about becoming supermodels. But what happens when you take a Victoria Secret Angel and put her in front of a computer? You get Kode with Klossy Summer Coding Camp that’s what!
According to Fast Company, Karlie Kloss, former Victoria Secret Supermodel, took a pre-college coding course, two years ago, and loved it so much that she started the Kode with Karlie scholarship program. The program offered high school girls, from around the world, the opportunity to earn a scholarship, to learn computer programming at the same school Karlie went to.
This summer, she is going one step further and has created a summer camp that will be offered to girls ages 13-18, in Los Angeles, New York and her home town of St Louis. The Kode with Klossy 2016 Summer Camp is Karlie’s way of empowering young women to explore coding’s endless possibilities and increase access to computer science education……
“Through our camp, nearly eighty young women will join a community of female coding students to learn the fundamentals of programming Ruby. The Kode With Klossy curriculum, powered by the learn.co platform and taught by inspiring teachers, is designed to be fun, hands-on and collaborative. Through teamwork and creativity, each student will learn how to use code to build a web app that expresses her personal passions.”
If this is not awesome enough, the fact that it goes for two weeks and the girls will be introduced to software engineering principles and learn the same programming languages behind apps like Twitter and The New York Times makes it a total entrepreneurial home run in my book. And, Oh, by the way, did I mention the fact that it’s free? Wait…..What?????
In order to apply, all a girl has to do is upload a 60 second video to YouTube with the hashtag #KodeWithKlossy telling them how you plan to use your coding superpowers to change the world…….
“One of the fun parts of working with these different young women is that they have amazing ideas and they’re just totally uninhibited with what they think of or dream of or hope to build. Do you remember the movie Clueless, and the closet in that movie where Cher’s flipping through her shirts and her dresses and her pants? They built that!”
Kloss does bring attention to the fact that coding is not easy. She says, “The first few days are really challenging and then it all kind of starts to click, and then you all of a sudden are able to build things and write lines of code and it’s all making sense.”
She goes on to point out that coding is a lot like fashion in that it all starts with an idea. And then line by line, stitch by stitch, you make something that millions of people around the world can use.
Karlie Kloss has the attention of young women, that much is clear. But now, it’s not just because she is modeling the newest and sexiest line of lingerie. It’s because her voice is being heard, by many young women, and it is saying “that women can do whatever they want, that they’re capable, and all they need is a little inspiration to reach out and look for something more.”
