Social Media For 2008

This past year I have found myself on numerous occasions uttering the words, "If I had known then, what I know now.....". Unfortunately, this form of thinking gets me no where since the mistakes of yesterday make us who we are today.

So instead of bore you with the mistakes I made this past year, I would like to share with you a few things that I am taking into the new year based on what I have learned in 2007.

  1. Be teachable! I've always considered myself to be somewhat teachable but this last year has been an eye opening experience for me in regards to the importance of being able to admit one's limitations in business. With humility comes knowledge and with knowledge comes power. Unfortunately, the power in social media can easily become corrupted so it is important to remain humble and yet assertive towards the changes in online conversations.
  2. Be organized! I look forward to 2008 from an organizational perspective since all of my kids will finally be in school full time. Being a mom has been my biggest priority for the last 15 years and while it has been wonderful, I am looking forward to further developing my social media skills with the extra time I will have this year.
  3. Accept failure! Without failure, there are no successes. I am a bit of a perfectionist. I don't like to make mistakes. I'm taking a lesson from Mark Zuckerberg, and realizing I am not perfect and I am going to make mistakes. Being able to accept them and move on is the only way I can influence change. And in 2008, change is good.

What have you learned this last year that you are taking into the new year?

What a great perspective to start 2008 with! The ability and willingness to listen to the market (aka being teachable) is the key ingredient to anyone's success in social media.

And believe it or not, failure is not only forgiven in this realm, it's almost expected. Things are moving so quickly that you get many opportunities to keep trying as you learn from your mistakes. As a matter of fact, there's actually a recent book by IBM Press called Do It Wrong Quickly that covers the very same concept.

Keep up the great work for '08 and best of luck!

Thank you Scott,

You, especially, have taught me a lot over the last year and I so appreciate you. Thanks for the book rec. I got an Amazon gift card for Christmas and am looking for some new reading material. I will definitely check it out!
Cheers!

Oh c'mon! I was hoping for a real big juicy mistake! Hell, I call Scott David all the time. He doesn't mind! He's gregarious that way. "Just don't call me late to marketing," he'll say back with a chuckle!

I was hoping you gave away credit card numbers or something. Rats. Next time.

Have a great 2007. Who knows? Maybe we'll cross paths at some conference or another and say howdy do in person, too. : )

Chris,

Thanks for visiting. Actually I have made some giant mistakes this last year (that may incriminate me if I speak of them online) but I only felt bad about the Scott/David incident. heehee.
I truly hope we can connect someday that would be fun!
