Two of my kids are in college. One of my kids has graduated from college and my youngest is 6 years away from college. That is a total of four kids that I worry about being away from home and their safety.
I know…..I know……they are adults, I need to let them go. But when I receive emails like this, I tend to get a little concerned……
“Shots Fired near MU. Take precautions.”
I never hear anything from my daughter when I get emails like this. Never a “campus is shut down” or “kids have been shot”, or “Mom, I’m scared”. But when you have tragedies like Columbine, Umpqua Community College and Virginia Tech, a mother worries. Especially when I read that “bills have been introduced in at least 37 states that would allow guns on college campuses”.
I asked my oldest, what he thought of the idea that guns might be legal on college campuses. He thought it was a bad idea. Why? Because of all the drugs and alcohol consumption that goes on. “Just imagine some drunk guy gets mad and grabs his gun.” Good point!
Millennials are paying attention…..
After the Charleston massacre left nine dead last June, DoSomething.org reached out to its members — aged 13 to 25 — for their responses to the shooting. Within days, we were bombarded with over 26,000 messages from young Americans who described themselves as “disgusted,” “heartbroken,” and “ashamed.”
According to DoSomething.org, some college kids are taking action to keep guns off campus with their new social media campaign……
The #GunsOut campaign, is an effort to spread awareness on gun safety reform. Students are posting pictures on social media, flexing their muscles and saying, “These are the only guns I want on campus.”
I have to say, I love it when young adults fight for a cause especially when it’s one that I agree with (and believe me, there are a lot I don’t agree with).
Ok, so many of you are going to say, “if it’s our right to carry a concealed weapon, then that applies to adults on college campuses”. I get it, because I don’t want that right taken away from me either. But what I do like about this campaign is the fact that it creates awareness. It is an opportunity for kids to stand together for something they believe in, which in this case, is their safety at school. And there is nothing I want more than my kids to be safe at college.
One 16 yr old asks this question….
“How many shootings will it take for people to realize that guns kill people?”
The reality is that if someone is determined, they can get a hold of any type of weapon and make efforts to inflict injury on others. It’s just the world we live in…. It is broken and damaged and constantly changing to accommodate our imperfections. But when a group of people come together in an effort to protect each other then their is hope. Hope for our kids and hope for the future.
